“Vinegar - Its Uses Never Sour”
On November 2, Newsday.com based in Melville, New York published a column by Erica Marcus titled "Vinegar - Its Uses Never Sour" which mentions vinegar.  A reader asked the following question of Ms. Marcus:

"Frequently, especially in my old recipe books, a recipe will call for just "vinegar." Which kind are they referring to - cider or white vinegar? I suspect it is cider because that was used so much years ago. I'm not even sure when white distilled vinegar came into being."

Ms. Marcus responded indicating "Vinegar is an ancient fluid, used by the Babylonians 7,000 years ago as a preservative and condiment, according to the Vinegar Institute, an international trade association based in Atlanta. It is mentioned in the Bible, was drunk by Roman legionnaires and, famously, was used by Cleopatra to dissolve pearls."
